You kinda just know. There's no way to quantify it, you feel it. Generally the baseline is if someone you know very well is going the extra mile for you without expecting anything in return but your companionship. But sometimes it's simpler than that or more complex than that. And there are different types of love, too, so someone may love you in a way you don't share or aren't expecting.
Love is like a really good joke. If you try to explain why it works you just end up ruining it.
